Favorites from Probloggers Top 5 Group Writing Project (Part 3)

I screened the entire list from Probloggers Top 5 - Group Writing Project for posts that were relevant to the subject area of this blog (read communication, blogging, community, conversation, interaction, etc.) and this is the third batch of recommended reads in no particular order:

Building a Blog Community
“I look at my blog from the perspective of a professional storyteller. I want to tell a good story when I write, and I want to entertain my audience. My main hope is that people will keep coming back. I hope that blogging friends I make will connect with other blogging friends to whom I link, and it will become one large blogging community of zany, eclectic people.” This quote is a perfect introduction to the post by Shelly Kneupper Tucker. This is surely one of the best posts that was submitted and that her introduction and further thoughts are real and valid is reflected in her comments. In other words is it a very good example of what I will be aiming at as well - that everything goes to together - the purpose, the content, the form, the audience. If I just could write half as well I would be happy (see below).

Top 5 Hottest Blogger Fantasies
“Sometimes when you have a new/unknown blog, it can get a bit lonely. It’s like you’ve done all the preparation for a great party, with food, music and ambiance. You’re all decked out in your best party dress, and you’re just sitting there on the couch twiddling your thumbs, waiting for someone to show up.” I think everybody is guilty of having at least one of the fantasies that Sharon Sarmiento lists. Most probably number one which is about traffic, but regardless which is this an entertaining read and yet something to keep in mind if you don’t want blogging to turn sour.

Top 5 tips for beating blogger’s block
“”Writing is easy” said journalist Gene Fowler. “All you do is stare at a blank sheet of paper until drops of blood form on your forehead.” We might be staring at a blank screen nowadays but the feeling of frustration is just the same. So what can you do if you get hit by blogger’s block?” Asks Joanna Young and lists her own 5 + 1 suggestions of what to do. Good advice and I particularly like her bonus tip, which is asking questions. If you are curious and always asking questions you will certainly never run out of ideas and even if you cannot turn them into complete posts can you always pass them on to your readers and thus get the conversation going.

Top 5 Tips Writing for Blogs
“… it is a mistake to hold a negative opinion of your writing skills. Everyone has the capacity to become a competent writer. Good writing doesn’t require expert knowledge; the best writing is often simple and clear. If you can gradually improve your writing skills it will definitely help your blog; furthermore, you will find the writing aspect of blogging become less intimidating and more enjoyable.” Not surprisingly is the most important advice to keep developing your writing skills. Furthermore is carefully choosing your topics, writing with your readers in mind, doing so in a professional style and not being afraid of being inspired by others important when growing as a writer. Good advice that I certainly will be trying out and keeping in mind.

The Top 5 Free Search Engine Optimization Tools
“You can pay tens of thousands of dollars for great SEO help (and not-so-great SEO help!!). But if you’re willing to learn the ropes and do some research, you can get great search engine traffic on your own - for free or for very little $.” Great advice from Wendy Piersall presenting 5 tips with tools that will help you analyze your keywords and backlink anchor text, create a sitemap, find keywords and reveal the search terms people use to find your site and track incoming referrals. I guess you can go overboard when it comes to seo tools, but when you wonder about, or need, something is it nonetheless good to know what you can actually check or implement and how easy it is to do it.

Remember reading is only the first step. Acting upon what you read is what makes it worthwhile and these posts certainly offer enough opportunities and suggestions to do something. So go ahead…

Hi Jan–I am so tickled to be included in your picks! Thank you for your sweet words, and I commend you for screening the entire humongous list from Problogger!

BTW–so sorry to be like a month late in realizing you were kind enough to include me on this. Maybe I could use the excuse that I’ve been reading through the 800+ posts from the contest all this time? :-)

Anyhoo, I’m glad that I’ve found you now, cuz I’m loving your blog!

    Cheers,

    Sharon

Yes, nice excuse Sharon :-) I believe you too ;-) You are right about screening and not reading. I had to screen to pick, but then the selection quickly wins in clarity.

About you being late, have you already forgotten that we exchanged comments about Einstein and the posts we had written about him?

Thanks for the kind words. I do think I managed to write one or two decent articles, but hopefully I can do at lot better once I get a little more experienced :-)
